Wood moulding consists of strips of materials that are used for decoration throughout the home. Because of its cross-sectioned shape, it provides contrasts of light and dark shading that bring definition to a structure. It can be applied to a structure that is already in place, which increases the possibilities of effects that can be created without changing or damaging the existing structure.

Moulding can complement other trim in a room in a variety of ways to lend the area a rich feel. Crown mouldings trim the ceiling or cabinets to draw the eye upwards and give the room a stately feel. Chair rails protect walls from dining chairs and give a room a lower focal point; they are often used in conjunction with paneling to create a wainscoting that is both durable and opulent. Mouldings can also be used to decorate furniture and cabinet doors for some extra visual interest.
